Greeting an Alien!

Suppose we met an Alien. How would we greet it?

We don't know whether the Alien is friendly or not. It is safe to approach?

Perhaps, rather than approaching it ourselves and being killed, let us send a Robot Ambassador to greet the Alien, and see if the Robot survives. If it survives, perhaps we can risk having a closer look at the Alien ourselves.
